Brown tips are one of the most common plant complaints, and they are almost never a crisis. The leaf itself is still working; only the edges have died back. That said, the tips are a signal. Ignoring them means whatever is stressing the plant keeps stressing it, and more leaf tissue follows.

The good news: most causes are simple to address once you know which one you are dealing with. A few visual clues (where the brown appears, how fast it spreads, what the soil feels like) point you toward the right answer quickly.

Low Humidity Is the Most Common Culprit

Most houseplants sold at nurseries come from tropical or subtropical regions where the air holds a lot of moisture. Homes, especially during winter when heating runs constantly, can drop to 20-30% relative humidity. That is too dry for plants like calatheas, ferns, peace lilies, and any thin-leaved tropical.

The tip of a leaf is the farthest point from the root system, so it is the first place to show stress when the plant cannot pull enough moisture from the air. Tips go crispy and tan, then the browning creeps toward the blade.

How to tell if humidity is the issue

The pattern matters. Low-humidity browning typically starts at the very tip and progresses inward along the leaf margins. The rest of the plant looks reasonably healthy. The brown tips feel papery and dry rather than soft or mushy.

A cheap hygrometer (under $15 at most hardware stores) tells you exactly what humidity level your room sits at. Most tropicals do well between 50% and 70%. Below 40%, sensitive species start to suffer, and calatheas and maidenhair ferns in particular can start curling and browning within a couple of weeks of sitting at winter-dry indoor levels.

What to do

Moving the plant away from heating vents is the first step. Vents blast dry, warm air directly onto leaves and accelerate moisture loss. Grouping plants together raises the local humidity slightly as they transpire. A small humidifier running for a few hours each day near your plant collection makes a meaningful difference, especially through winter. University of Maryland Extension notes that most indoor environments simply lack the humidity houseplants evolved with, and recommends grouping plants and running an automatic humidifier as the most reliable fixes, ahead of misting.

Pebble trays with water sitting below the pot add some humidity through evaporation, though the effect is modest, typically a few percentage points right around the leaves rather than a room-wide change. They work better as a supplement than a sole solution.

Misting leaves is a common suggestion, but the humidity boost it provides evaporates within minutes and does not meaningfully change the air around your plant. On top of that, water pooling on leaves in low-light areas can invite fungal issues. A humidifier is simply more effective.

Watering Problems: Too Much or Too Little

Overwatering and underwatering both show up as brown tips, which is why the leaf pattern alone does not always tell the whole story. You need to check the soil.

Underwatering

When the soil dries out completely between waterings, the plant pulls water from every available cell, including the leaf edges. Tips turn brown and crispy, the soil in the pot feels bone dry or has pulled away from the pot edges, and the whole plant may look slightly droopy or limp.

The fix is adjusting your watering cadence. Most tropical houseplants want the top 1 to 2 inches of soil to dry before the next watering, then a thorough soak until water drains from the bottom. Checking the soil every 5 to 7 days is more reliable than watering on a fixed calendar schedule, since conditions change by season. A simple finger test to a depth of about two inches, recommended by extension horticulturists, is usually enough: if it comes out dry, water; if it comes out with soil clinging to it, wait.

Overwatering

Overwatered plants also develop brown tips, but the pattern is different. The browning tends to be softer, sometimes with a yellow halo around the brown area. The soil feels wet or soggy, and the pot may feel much heavier than expected. Roots sitting in waterlogged soil cannot absorb oxygen, and the plant starts to shut down leaf tissue from the tips inward.

The solution is letting the soil dry out more between waterings. If the pot has no drainage hole, water accumulates at the bottom with nowhere to go. Repotting into a pot with drainage is the most reliable long-term fix. If you suspect the roots have already been sitting wet for weeks, it's worth checking further: persistent overwatering can progress to actual root rot, which needs a different response than simply cutting back on watering.

Salt and Mineral Buildup in the Soil

Tap water contains dissolved minerals, and liquid fertilizers leave behind salts as they are absorbed. Over months, these accumulate in the potting mix. The concentration around the roots rises, and through a process called reverse osmosis, the roots actually lose moisture to the surrounding soil rather than absorbing it. Tips and edges brown as a result.

A white crust on the soil surface or on the outside of a terracotta pot is a visible sign of salt buildup. Flushing the soil every two to three months helps. Take the pot to a sink and run water slowly through it for several minutes until what drains out runs clear. University of Maryland Extension's guidance on watering indoor plants recommends pouring at least twice the volume of the pot through the soil when leaching, since a quick splash of water channels straight through the driest cracks and leaves most of the accumulated salt behind. If you fertilize regularly, reducing to a diluted half-strength dose suits most indoor plants through the growing season.

Some plants are particularly sensitive to fluoride in tap water. Spider plants, dracaenas, and peace lilies are known to develop brown tips specifically from fluoride exposure. If you have one of those and flushing does not help, switching to filtered or distilled water often clears the problem. Note that letting tap water sit out overnight releases dissolved chlorine but does nothing for fluoride, since fluoride does not evaporate; distilled water, rainwater, or a basic reverse-osmosis filter are the only reliable ways to remove it.

Too Much Direct Sun or Heat Stress

Leaves scorch when they receive more direct sunlight than they can handle. Scorch looks like broad tan patches across the leaf face, particularly on the side facing the window. This is different from tip browning: it does not start at the edges and move inward; it appears where the light hit hardest.

Direct south- or west-facing window light in summer can scorch most tropical houseplants, which evolved under forest canopies rather than in open sun. Indirect bright light, roughly 2,000 to 10,000 lux, suits the majority of popular houseplants. University of Maryland Extension classifies anything above roughly 1,000 footcandles (over about 10,000 lux) as direct sunlight strong enough to scorch shade-adapted foliage within a few hours of exposure. A sheer curtain diffuses direct rays without sacrificing much brightness.

Heat stress compounds light stress. Leaves sitting near a window that gets very hot in afternoon sun, or directly above a heating source, dry out faster than the root system can compensate. Most tropicals prefer temperatures in the 18-27°C (65-80°F) range. Sustained temperatures above 30°C (86°F) will stress them, and the leaf tips are the first to show it.

Less Common Causes Worth a Look

Once you have ruled out humidity, watering, and light, a few other factors are worth checking.

Pests

Spider mites cause stippled, pale patches and fine webbing on leaves, and heavy infestations can produce tip browning. The UC IPM Pest Note on spider mites describes the earliest sign as light stippling on the upper leaf surface, sometimes with a bronze cast, well before webbing becomes obvious. Identifying spider mites early makes treatment much simpler, before the population spreads to neighboring plants. The undersides of leaves are where mites tend to cluster, and the webbing is usually visible even without a magnifying glass once the infestation is established.

Chemical sensitivity

Some plants react to chloramine or chlorine in municipal tap water, even when minerals are not a problem. Leaving tap water out overnight allows some chlorine to off-gas, though chloramine (used in many cities) does not dissipate this way. Filtered or rainwater is the cleaner solution for sensitive plants. If your municipality's water report lists chloramine rather than free chlorine as the disinfectant (most water utilities publish this online), sitting water out overnight will not help at all, and it's worth switching to a filter rated for chloramine removal instead.

Should You Trim Brown Tips Off?

The brown tissue is dead and will not recover. Trimming it off does not hurt the plant, and most people find the result tidier. Use clean scissors and cut just inside the brown area, following the natural leaf shape so the remaining tip tapers naturally rather than ending in a blunt horizontal line.

Do not remove entire healthy leaves unless they are more than half dead. Green leaf tissue is still photosynthesizing and contributing to the plant's overall energy. The goal is to remove dead tissue without sacrificing what the plant can still use.

Sterilize scissors between plants if you are trimming several at once. It takes ten seconds and prevents accidentally spreading a pest or pathogen you have not yet diagnosed. A quick wipe with rubbing alcohol on a cotton pad works fine; there's no need for anything more elaborate for routine trimming.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will brown tips spread to the rest of the leaf?

Not on their own. Brown tips are dead tissue, and dead tissue does not continue to expand. What expands is the underlying problem causing them. Fix the cause and new brown tissue stops forming. The existing brown tips stay but do not grow.

My plant gets the same care as always, but the tips are getting worse. What changed?

Seasonal shifts are usually the answer. Heating systems run more in winter, dropping indoor humidity. Light angles change, and what was indirect sun in summer becomes direct or much weaker in winter. Plants also grow more slowly in winter, so the effects of minor issues compound over weeks rather than resolving on their own.

How often should I flush my potting soil to prevent salt buildup?

Every two to three months is a reasonable baseline for most indoor collections, though some extension guides put the interval closer to every four to six months for plants that get plain water and no regular fertilizer. If you fertilize regularly during the growing season (spring through early fall), flushing once a month during that period keeps salt concentration from climbing too high.

Do some plants get brown tips more easily than others?

Yes. Calatheas, ferns, maidenhair ferns, and spider plants tip brown readily in response to dry air, fluoride, or inconsistent watering. Pothos, ZZ plants, and snake plants are far more tolerant of those same conditions. Matching the plant to your actual home environment prevents most tip browning before it starts.

Can I fix the existing brown tips, or only prevent new ones?

Distilled water and reverse-osmosis water strip both out almost completely, which is why they work faster on stubborn tip browning in fluoride-sensitive species. The tradeoff is that distilled water carries no minerals at all, so plants relying on it long-term still need a complete, diluted fertilizer to avoid a genuine nutrient deficiency.

Could brown tips actually be a nutrient problem rather than a salt or humidity issue?

It's less common but worth ruling out if you've addressed humidity, watering, and salts with no improvement. A plant that's never been fertilized in a year or more, growing in the same depleted soil, can show tip browning alongside pale, slow new growth as a general nutrient shortfall rather than an excess. That pattern points toward starting a diluted balanced fertilizer during the growing season rather than flushing the soil further.
